Classification: Part-time (Up to 25 hours/week), flexible schedule- more hours if there are weddings and funerals.

Direct Supervisor: Director of Business and Administration 

Indirectly Reports To: Pastors, Staff Parish Relations Committee (“SPRC”), Board of Trustees

Position Overview:

The Custodian participates in the general cleaning of the church building and property. Under the direction of the Director of Business and Administration, the Custodian is to ensure the facilities and property are maintained in clean, orderly, safe, and inviting condition. The Custodian will set up rooms as requested by the meeting organizers.

  • Job specific:       

o    Knowledgeable of custodial best practices including cleaning for a variety of situations.

o    Ability to lift 30 pounds.

o   Due to the variety of tasks related to cleaning and maintaining the facility, the position will require physical activities including, but not limited to, grasping, pulling, pushing, twisting, kneeling, squatting, lifting, and reaching above the head/shoulders.


Job Responsibilities:

The Custodian will assist the other cleaning and maintenance staff with the cleaning of the church building and grounds.  The Custodian is expected to perform proactively in maintaining a clean and safe facility. The Custodian will perform various cleaning and general maintenance tasks, including but not limited to trash removal, vacuuming, mopping, floor polishing, carpet cleaning, dusting, clearing of sidewalks (e.g. trash, leaves, and snow), preparing meeting rooms as requested, and closing of the facility.


General Job Responsibilities:

  • Comply with policies of West Des Moines United Methodist Church, the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, and the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church.
  • Respond promptly to communications through personal interaction, email, text, and telephone.
  • Encouraged to be present on Sunday mornings to increase visibility and support for tasks.
  • Meet regularly with the Building and Grounds Superintendent to plan, review, evaluate, and coordinate activities and needs of the facility and grounds.
  • Operate within the constraints of the approved church budget.
  • Other tasks as assigned by other cleaning and maintenance staff, Director of Business, pastors, SPRC, and/or Board of Trustees.

Job Specific Responsibilities:

  • Perform tasks necessary to maintain the church building and grounds in a clean, inviting, and safe condition.
  • Clean assigned rooms and hallways, including carpet cleaning as needed or directed.
  • Clean restrooms and stock supplies.
  • Report applicable matters to the Maintenance staff or Business Director, such as supplies needed, building and grounds maintenance items, equipment repairs required, and safety and security concerns.
  • Participate in the opening and closing of the church facilities as scheduled if staff can work on Sunday mornings.
  • Prepare the facility for scheduled activities and special events (for example, the sanctuary for weddings and funerals and the various rooms for meetings). Also reset and clean rooms after activities and events.
  • Useproper and safe procedures.
