Ministry Assistant for Christian Education - Sarah Jacobson Minimize

I come to WDMUMC with a background of diverse ministry experiences. I graduated from The University of Northwestern, St. Paul with a degree in Children and Family Ministries. Over the past decade I have spent many summers working as a counselor at church camps. I have worked in three different churches with the children, youth and family ministry programs. I also taught preschool for several years. I recently left my Children’s Ministry Coordinator position at New Hope UMC in Des Moines to pursue this job because it was much closer to home.

I am originally from Minnesota and was raised in the Methodist Church, as my dad is a United Methodist Pastor. I relocated to Iowa five years ago after marrying my husband Ryan. He is originally from Ankeny, but now we live in West Des Moines, where he works as the City Clerk. We have a two-yearold son, Dane, who keeps us plenty busy at home.

I’m looking forward to bringing my gifts and talents to serve the congregation of this church. As I begin to settle in to my new position, I hope to have some regular office hours (as well as my contact information) posted very soon. Thank you for giving me the chance to be a part of this church family.

Director of Music Ministeries- Tom Sletto

Tom Sletto is our Director of Music Ministries, serving the congregation by leading and/or supporting all vocal choirs, bell choirs, and the praise team.  He is the Assistant Professor of Music Education at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Tom received his B.A. in Music Education from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN and completed the Master of Arts in Music Education from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN.

At the age fourteen, Tom began leading worship in a small country church by playing a small Hammond organ as well as leading from the piano. Since that time he has continued his music ministry by serving as the Director of Music Ministries at Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, MN, First United Methodist Church in Anderson, Indiana, and Faith Lutheran Church in Clive.

His wife Barbara Sletto, is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Heartland Youth Choir, which encompasses over 150 singers ages 6 to 18.   Tom feels a deep calling to always be a part of the music ministry in a church. Since his musical abilities were a gift of God, he has always felt the need to serve in any capacity that God has called him into. Worship and fellowship have always been a part of his life since a child.

Director of Preschool & PMO - Nancy Setchell

I was born in St. Louis, MO, but have lived in the Des Moines area for over 40 years. I am married to Brian and have three children and one son-in-law. They are Cristi Setchell, Nate Setchell, Alli and Matt Costello.

I have served as the Director of Parents’ Morning Out (PMO) since May 1990 and as Director of Preschool since August 1999. Our preschool partners with the West Des Moines Community Schools and offers the Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program for 4-5 year old children. My duties include overseeing the operation of both programs. The favorite part of my job is the people. I love the families—parents and children. We have a great staff with which to work.

I have a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in exceptional children from Iowa State University. I enjoy playing golf, spending time with family, and singing. My passion is to help others, especially people in need.

My favorite scripture is Romans 8:31, “ What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Director of Administration - Linda Plummer

My position oversees many of the day-to-day operations of the church in the areas of administration, communications, finance, and church facilities.

I see God at work every day: In the people I meet, in random songs I hear on the radio, in nature. God isn’t somewhere “out there” . . .  he is here, with us, in the form of the Holy Spirit. He is speaking to me constantly . . . if I will only be silent long enough to hear him.

My husband, Pat, is a retired accountant. We I have three wonderful children who grew up in WDMUMC. Adam teaches math and computer technology at Adel High School. He is married to Kelly, who teaches preschool at the Science Center of Iowa. Emily lives in Urbandale and works for A-Tech – a company that does energy audits and energy rebates. Mike is in Omaha  working for Lockheed Martin as a computer engineer.

A favorite scripture is Colossians 3:12-15 – “Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.” (NLT)

I think this scripture provides a good model for how Christ wants us to live. It stresses love, grace, and gratitude.

Volunteer Membership Director - Sharon Sibert

As you might guess, this position is responsible for maintaining the membership records of the church. When people join our congregation, their names and information they provide are entered into the permanent membership records of the church. As family units change, those changes are also noted in the records. Births, deaths, marriages, membership transfers, etc. all become a part of their membership record. I also follow up with members when they move, change address or phone numbers, or place of worship. It is really helpful when members notify us of changes. This can be done via email or a phone call to the office. Thank you in advance for helping us to keep your information current.

Our family joined this church in 1983. Like many of you, we joined because of the people and their love for Christ.  Our children were confirmed in this church and we have tried to actively participate in the ministries of the church in a variety of ways. I think it is important for each of us to continue to grow and change not only so we remain healthy but our church also remains healthy. I am happy to be able to serve the church in this volunteer position.

 Building Superintendent - Robert Bayse

I started working for WDMUMC in April 2008 after being employed by Power Cleaner of Des Moines for several years. I enjoy the challenge of overseeing the maintenance of our large facility and grounds.

I am married to Laura,  and we have a daughter Abigayle.

I found this scripture on an index card when I started here. My guess is that it came from Gary Padgett (one of our former superintendents).  I never took it off the bulletin board I found it on. It is a scripture that puts my head in the right place.

Isaiah 46:3-4
“Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of the house of Israel, you whom I have upheld since you were conceived, and have carried since your birth. Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you."
