 Welcome Pastor Cindy Minimize

New Lead Pastor Appointment

The West Des Moines UMC Staff Pastor Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce that the Cabinet of the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church has appointed a new lead pastor for our church and the SPRC has approved the appointment. Our new lead pastor effective July 1st will be Cindy Hickman.

Cindy Hickman grew up in Iowa.  She received a BA in teaching from the University of Northern Iowa and taught for 17 years in grades 6 through college level.  She has also worked as a fund raiser in the non-profit world serving as director of development for organizations such as Children and Families of Iowa.  She and her husband Dave joined West Des Moines United Methodist Church in 1992 and were very active in adult education classes at our church.

In 2003, Cindy felt a call to ministry, and at the age of 50, she began seminary at Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City.  During her four years of seminary, she served as a student pastor at West Des Moines UMC.  In 2008, she was appointed as the pastor of a two point charge, Linn Grove United Methodist Church in Prole and Bloomfield United Methodist Church on the SE corner of Des Moines.

Bloomfield UMC grew and eventually became a single charge with Cindy as the pastor.  She served there until the summer of 2016 when she was granted a sabbatical for a personal reflection project.  She is now ready and excited to re-enter active ministry.

Cindy and Dave have two children.  Their daughter Lynn and husband Joe live in Urbandale with six year old granddaughter, Auden.  Their other daughter Lisa is married to Ryne and they live in Colorado.  The Hickman’s love to read and travel.

The last 2 years our church has been blessed by the dedicated service of Rev. Steve Bibb. We will miss Rev. Steve a great deal and celebrate the growth our church has experienced under his skillful leadership. As we look forward to the future, it is exciting to think about the next chapter for our church.  During this time, the SPRC requests the following from you.

1.       Prayer.  Many of you pray daily for our church.  Thank you, it is so important. Please include Pastor Cindy in your prayers.  The power of prayer is immense and God will bless those for whom you pray.

2.       Patience. The official transition date is July 1st, however a church of our size, or any size really, doesn’t make the transition in a single day.  Pastor Cindy will be learning about our ministries, our small groups, our names and faces for several weeks or months after she begins.

3.       Unity.  Please remember the ways we are different pale in comparison to the ways we are the same.  There will always be differences between people within any body, but going forward let us focus on how we can work together, under the shared goal of changing lives and affecting change in our community and our world in the name of Jesus Christ.
